airborne extended
airborne extended is an international ensemble based in Vienna with an unusual instrumentation: flutes (Elena Gabbrielli), harpsichord/keyboards (Sonja Leipold), recorders/Paetzold (Caroline Mayrhofer), and harp (Tina Žerdin). Rooted in the tradition of chamber music, the quartet brings it into the 21st century through numerous commissions of new works written specifically for the ensemble.
The ensemble constantly expands its artistic and research scope through international collaborations with different generations of composers, electronic musicians, and performers. With a strong focus on experimentation, airborne extended makes a significant contribution to the international perception of Austrian contemporary music in the field of contemporary ensembles.
In 2018/2019, the quartet was selected for the NASOM (New Austrian Sound of Music) program as an emerging ensemble and ambassador of contemporary music, and in 2025 it received the Outstanding Artist Award from the Austrian Ministry of Culture for its artistic and musical achievements.
As a mediator of bold and immediate musical ideas, the ensemble develops various projects and formats, including PRISM#, a Vienna-based concert series that intertwines music, electronics, objects, performance, and new media.
