Extended Techniques: The XAMP Microtonal Accordion
Saturday, November 28, 3:00 – 5:00pm
Musica in Prossimità renews its annual focus on contemporary performance practices with a workshop on the XAMP microtonal accordion, led by Luis Perez-Magaña, accordionist with Ensemble Cairn.
The session will explore the harmonic, timbral, and expressive possibilities of the XAMP, an instrument developed through the research of French accordionists Fanny Vicens and Jean-Étienne Sotty, in collaboration with instrument maker Philippe Imbert.
The first prototype was developed in 2015 as part of a project aimed at extending the accordion’s range while preserving its ergonomics, polyphonic capabilities, and main timbral characteristics.

the workshop
Through live demonstrations, examples from the contemporary repertoire, and opportunities for discussion, Luis Perez-Magaña will introduce the features of the XAMP microtonal accordion and explore how its unique tuning system opens up new possibilities for performance practice and musical composition. The presentation will be accompanied by musical examples showcasing the instrument’s use in the contemporary repertoire.
Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between instrument, performer, and composition.
The XAMP is, in fact, the result of a research process in which instrument design and musical practice have developed in parallel, giving rise to new compositional possibilities and to a repertoire specifically conceived for the microtonal accordion.
Target audience
The workshop is open to musicians, composers, and anyone curious about instrumental research and performance practices in contemporary music. No previous musical experience is required.
Workshop Goals
Through listening and direct observation of the instrument, the session will explore the relationships between tuning, timbre, register, and gesture, highlighting how changes in instrument design can open up new perspectives for contemporary musical practice.

Biographies
Luis Perez-Magaña
Luis Perez-Magaña is a concert accordionist who trained primarily with accordionists Vincent Lhermet and Fanny Vicens at the CRR de Boulogne-Billancourt, the École Supérieure de Musique de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, and the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne, where he graduated with distinction with a Master’s degree in concert performance. As a bandoneon player, he studied with Juanjo Mosalini at the Conservatoire de Gennevilliers. A recipient of the Fondation Banque Populaire award, Luis Perez has performed internationally with ensembles and institutions including the Orchestre Victor Hugo Bourgogne Franche-Comté, conducted by Jean-François Verdier, and at festivals such as IRCAM’s ManiFeste, Les Musicales de Bagatelle, and the Saline Royale d’Arc-et-Senans, as well as on radio programmes in Switzerland (RTS) and Mexico (Radio UNAM). Through these collaborations, he has performed works by composers including Raphaèle Biston, Luca Antignani, Joan Magrané, David Tellez, and Mateo Rodríguez. He is co-founder of Duo Contratempo, with flutist Willemine Lecointre, and teaches accordion at the Cité de la musique Simone Veil in Meaux.
Founded in 1998 and directed by Jérôme Combier, Ensemble Cairn is one of France’s most active ensembles in the creation and dissemination of contemporary music. The name Cairn refers to the piles of stones that mark mountain trails—an image that reflects the ensemble’s approach to conceiving each concert as a listening journey, bringing different works into dialogue around a shared idea. Its work encompasses new music for ensemble and chamber music, while also engaging in dialogue with visual arts and other artistic forms. Cairn has collaborated with composers and artists including Gérard Pesson, Tristan Murail, Philippe Leroux, Francesco Filidei, Noriko Baba, and Franck Bedrossian. The ensemble has appeared at international festivals and institutions including IRCAM, Festival d’Automne à Paris, Archipel, Darmstadt, Villa Medici, and Philharmonie de Paris. In 2023, it gave the world premiere of Philippe Leroux’s L’Annonce faite à Marie. Its discography includes music by Pesson, Murail, Combier, Lazkano, and Lucas Fagin.
